Acids and bases are so last week
Now, buffer solutions is what I seek
But what is their use?
Students all around wonder
Why do we ICE and IF
From sun up to slumber?
But the drinks that many love
To be alcoholic
Need to ferment with acetate buffers
In order to frolic
And the clothes we all adorn
Can achieve vibrant colors
With a stable pH
Thanks to buffers and their scholars
Whether Old Spice or Dove
The deodarant that we must have
Keeps B.O. away
With sodium citrate on staff
So the next time you curse
Conjugates or Hederston-Hallsellbach
Remember the all uses of buffers
for having our back.

Students like us have heard of q, w, ΔH, and ΔE, but
Perhaps you haven’t been introduced to S and ΔG
Obedient supporters of Hess they follow the law
Now, the sum of the products minus sum of the reactants
Turns to free energy or entropy of a reaction with awe
And how are they related’, you might ask
Never forget that ΔG=ΔH-TS when performing a task
Entire reaction is spontaneous when ΔG is negative
If the reverse is spontaneous, then ΔG is positive
Time to practice with the knowledge you've gained
You got this; you’ve been trained!
~ Maia - Spontenaity, Entropy, & Free Energy
Energy, enthalpy, and thermochemistry
How do they relate?
They all involve heat, you see
There is no debate
There are many definitions to know
Like heat, work, and temperature
And three heat capacities also
Such as general, specific, and molar
Positive or negative determines if it's an endo or exo reaction
Those are easy, but more awaits
Like heat of fusion versus heat of vaporization
Solid to liquid or liquid to gas state
Then there’s the total change in enthalpy
Which equals the sum of products - sum of reactants
But don’t forget calorimetry
Nor its equation to find deltaE combustion!
~ Tiara - Energy, Enthalpy, & Thermochemistry - 2025
We’ve made it to the last chapter, we are close to the end
Chapter 11 covers batteries, and all things electrochem
We began with some review, don’t forget about Chem 1a
Oxidation numbers and redox rules still help us find our way
Galvanic Cells are spontaneous, Electrolytic Cells are not
Electrons flow anode to cathode - don’t let that be forgot!
Ions migrate through with the help of a salt bridge,
And in Galvanic Cells, E° is always positive
We can calculate E°, and we know this well
Know how to find ΔG, wmax , and K of a cell
The information on our constant sheet still plays a big role,
Such as Faraday’s Constant in coulombs per mole
There’s primary cells and secondary cells - batteries are either of them
Secondary cells can be recharged, the other can’t be used again
With electroplating, a metal covers another in a thin coat
It’s used for cheap jewelry, cars, and even parts of boats
And with that Chem 1b is over, feel proud that you tried your best
Give yourself a pat on the back and a round of applause -
You are more than the grade on your test!!!
~ Natalie - Electrochemistry - 2025
Oh! Negative log of concentration of H+
My ability to live lies
My blood requiring a pH of 7.35
Acids are sour
Bases are bitter
But do not consume
If you don’t want blisters!
Beware! The pretty thymol blue
Like a poison dart frog
Blue solution will turn your skin slippery
And burn it if hot pink
But weak acid does not mean safe!
Like you might think
HF can disintegrate corpses
Decalcifying bones in its wake
~ Tessa - Acids and Bases - 2025
Chemical reactions give me fear that I may never again see day,
But behold! The equilibrium constant, to guide my way!
With its C to the C times D to the D,
over A to the A times B to the B,
This constant shines spectacularly.
If greater than one, the products must be
Overpowering the reactants victoriously.
And if less than one, the reactants so meek
Are greater than the products definitively.
And what’s this? It’s our beloved PV,
The Ideal Gas law turns K to Kp,
Converting the two needs a power of RT,
And now we can solve any table with I, C, and E.
Indeed, when I am faced with the woes of chemistry
Only the equilibrium constant can save me.
~ Jonah - Chemical Equilibrium- 2025
We’ve learned about coffee cups and bombs,
Which acids are weak, and which are strong,
And how to write an equilibrium expression,
So now we can end the quarter on chapter 11!
I don’t know much, just Redox reactions,
and of the whole chapter that’s merely a fraction.
Don’t get me started on those Galvanic Cells,
The anode, cathode, and something else….
Oh, the salt bridge! That allows the flow of e-.
See I don’t know it all, but it’s not as hard as it seems.
Remember anode for oxidized and cathode for reduced,
Just don’t mix those up you silly goose.
Problems with standard potentials are not that bad,
If you reverse the equation, change the sign easy as that.
And to remain spontaneous, Eocell should be positive.
Hey, look at that, we almost know all of it!
Look at the formula sheet – we’ve seen all the equations,
And which ones to use if the temperature’s changing.
Now we’ve learned everything, and what I can say
with absolute certainty is that you will be okay.
No matter how stressed about finals you may be,
You’re going to do great and see you in Chem 1C!
~ Payton - Electrochemistry - 2024
There once was a chemist named Gibbs
Who studied the energy of systems
He found that the change
With spontaneity was strange
It relied on heat and positions
That good old concept called entropy
It measured disorder and tendency
It increased in a reaction
When the products had more action
Or when the states went from solid to gassy
∆H is the lack of inaction
It measured the heat of reaction
Energy could come in
Or be left on a whim
Depending on formation subtraction
There once was an equation so neat
That related free energy and heat
It said ∆G
Relates to H, S, and T
And thus, Gibbs’ work was complete
~ Aaron - Spontaneity, Entropy, & Free Energy - 2024
Chapter Nine is simple, just remember these facts
Starting with thermodynamics, go ahead and relax
First law, the energy of the universe is constant
Pay attention, you'll understand in an instant,
Internal energy known as E,
The change in E is equal to q+w, you see
Work/w is calculated by -PeΔV
Now I know that one’s a handful to drop on you
Heat/q could be produced or reduced
But which cat equation do we use?
Check your units, beware of moles or mass
To see whether an n or an m goes before your cat,
Enthalpy is a tricky one, we calculate the change
It’ll tell us about the reaction, lets see what’s exchanged
Negative means exo, positive means endo
Don't worry we are near the end though
Up and down the heating curve goes,
Heat supplied and the temperature, it shows
Hess’s Law, an easy one to confuse,
Pay close attention, and you won’t lose,
A Coffee Cup calorimeter, the pressure is constant,
remember to use knowledge from all the previous topics
Again, units are crucial, so make sure you see,
and check for type 1, 2 or 3
~ Melissa - Energy, Enthalpy, & Thermochemistry - 2024
This chapter is all about buffers
But really they’re not that much tougher
Just acids and bases
Not many new faces
So calm down, there’s no need to suffer
Listing major species comes first
Forgetting this step is the worst
Weak acids stay as one
Their Ka is almost none
And so these reactions can be reversed
However strong acids and salts
Often come with particular faults
They tend to fall apart
Their ions do depart
Like plates in the San Andreas fault
Next see if a reaction occurs
If H+ or hydroxides concur
Or conjugate pairs
But if they aren’t there
Can we know the pH for sure? (sher)
It’s just an equilibrium problem (em)
Use an ICE table to find the M
Or if the acid’s strong
It was there all along
In the hydrogen ion column (em)
Let’s not forget Chem 1A, though
Limiting reagents, you must know
Results of reactions
Decide course of action
There may be a buffer cameo
Henderson-Hasselbalch equation
If you find yourself in this situation
It’s on your cheat sheet
The solution is sweet
Don’t you like this neat application?
~ Grace - Applications of Aqueous Equilibria - 2024
When determining equilibrium action
Don’t get caught up in the fraction
When you become proficient
In raising to coefficients
Your understanding will finally get traction.
If you can’t figure out strong versus weak
You might think your outcome is bleak
If you can’t find a K
Then it’ll go all the way
You have found the answer you seek.
Attention to detail is crucial
Strong base’s salts will be neutral
Strong acids will donate
Proton sealing their fate
Conjugate base formed by its removal.
Base pH’s are higher than 7
Of fourteen, not of eleven
Concentration included
And if its diluted
The pH will no doubt lessen.
When it comes to little x
Make sure to do your checks
If the percent’s under five
You’ll quickly realize
That you have way less steps.
If a strong base can accept
You may not be able to detect
The base in solution
Due to its complete diffusion
Now it's time to reflect.
When calculating negative log
You may find you head in a fog
If the process is long
And your answer is wrong
Don’t quit, it’s not the epilogue.

"Equilibrium for funsies"
Today we'll learn a bit about chemistry
That's right, all the tricks that are part of the registry
And while we'll focus on chapter six
We have all the solutions, yes, it's a mix.
Chemical equilibrium, it's a difficult concept
But fear not, for we have a bright prospect
The equilibrium constant, our beloved K
To figure it out there's always a way
At 8 am on a chilly day,
Professor Feldwinn will always say:
You followed all steps, plugged it into the expression
Now there are three ways to solve this hard question,
First, you can try the "guess and check"
Though that will probably break your neck
Then try the quadratic formula with a smile on your face,
But beware, you'll use up notebook space
Finally you can try the method of the assumption
This is the best in terms of time consumption
And this is how you calculate equilibrium concentration and pressure
Hopefully after this, you'll feel a bit fresher.

Chemistry is Fun
Taking a look back at redox reactions
We grab our books and push away all of our distractions
We remember all the fun we had in chem 1A
So we scream out in joy, hurray!
We OIL RIGged our way through and through
Until it became all we knew
We say to ourselves
Oxidation is loss
Reduction is gain
And now it's really stuck in our brain
Now we toss in spontaneity
And create new fun in chem 1B
Wow, we've never felt such glee!
We have galvanic cells
With spontaneous reactions
And a positive electromotive force
What else will we learn about in this course?
Electrolytic cells!
With non-spontaneous reactions
And a negative electromotive force
We're so smart now, like a knowledge source!
Now we sit here and wonder what else might be out there
Well, we'll just have to wait and see
Until next quarter in chem 1C!
~ Mia - Electrochemistry -2023
To start in chemistry
One must learn of Enthalpy
The heat of a system measured in joules
Often used when discussing fuels
For the change in entropy is what we truly desire
Whether the reaction gains or loses its fire
Feeling warm? Heat absorbed
A positive sign is acquired
When you burn the grease there's heat released
A negative symbol does defy her
Well there's Enthalpy! Your first lesson
Let me know if you have any questions!
~ Isabella - Spontaneity, Entropy, & Free Energy - 2023
They all deal with heat
So I made this beat
Green energy it would appear
Is the way to slow global warming here
We have windmills providing power
So that light can shine in the darkest hour
Temperature and Heat aren't the same
So let me explain to make it fair game
Temperature is that hot and cold state
Temperature can really frustrate
Heat is an energy shift
With that temperature can really drift
Enthalpy is heat of vaporization and fusion
These are the heat to change state which can look like an illusion
Hess's Law
Which is the sum of enthalpy dawg
~ David - Energy, Enthalpy, & Thermochemistry - 2023
Another Bluff Buffer
Buffer systems are reputable for how they maintain
The pH value that the solution has attained
Regardless of minute concentrations added,
The change in pH will not be rabid!
Only present in weak acids/bases and their conjugate
It's a wicked solution, I must admit.
Now that we are aware of their existence,
Let's consider some problems exhibiting their resistance
Taking a look at the species, we decide what's major:
Weak acids and bases remain in their true nature
Those that are strong will dissociate––
Into both ions willing to participate
And ones that simply sit back and spectate.
When calculating the pH of a buffer solution
A simple equation will eliminate all confusion.
Casting its light on my own last name,
The Henderson-Hasselbach deserves all its fame.
Now all good things must come to an end
And a buffer's capacity simply depends
On the amount of acid or base that can be added
Before the change in pH becomes more and more rapid.
It's greatest when [HA] and [A-] are in large and equal amounts,
But nevertheless, one shall never discount
The lasting importance of a good bluff buffer
Because simply put, it's like no other!
~ Yasi - Applications of Aqueous Equilibrium - 2023
An acid gives a neutron off
a base will take it.
The leftover H's, minus log
will let us pH it.
Over seven, then it's basic;
an acid's below.
If we took from top to bottom
here's how it would go.
Our drains are cleaned at pH fourteen;
with clothes, we use one less.
Some soapy suds are bubbled at twelve,
for ammonia eleven is best.
Tablets are made with ten pH
soda for baking with nine;
the ocean is just about eight on the scale,
while water if neutral is fine.
Surprisingly milk is a tad bit acidic,
our coffee, at six, a bit more;
While soda is just about 3 pH,
A simple tomato is four.
Right at the end of our list,
are 2 pH acids like vinaigrette,
our stomach which functions at one,
and battery acid, but that's about it.
(Now to be fair,
The acids could go into negative numbers
if we could find more than one mol of H+
for each liter of substance we wanted to study but
how we would practically measure the product is
something outside of the range of my knowledge so why don't we leave it at that, alright?)
~ Joseph - Acids & Bases - 2023
Le Chatelier's Tale
It was the perfect concentration of reactant to product,
A ratio known as the equilibrium constant.
Then came Le Chatelier's new code of conduct,
Answering – what would happen if it changed in an instant?
When conditions change, never fear!
No need to be perturbed,
For Le Chatelier's solution is clear,
Equilibrium shifts when disturbed!
When concentration of reactants rise,
The forward reaction makes haste,
Restoring all problems that arise!
As the concentration of products begin to climb,
Don't let your plans derail,
For the reverse reaction restores itself in good time!
And that is Le Chatelier's tale!
~ Yade - Chemical Equilibrium - 2023
The Key to Chapter 10
When I found out we were going on to Chapter 10,
I couldn't believe we were doing thermodynamics again,
Entropy, enthalpy, and heat capacity too,
Enough new formulas to turn your face blue
But never fear, for if you are unsure how to steer,
Delta G, is here to make it clear,
He goes by Gibbs and he's all about free energy,
After all, he works with the entropy of the universe in perfect synergy,
He's real dependent on his friend Temperature, who he calls Mr. T,
And together, we completed the ALEKS assignment, just us three,
Gibbs has been around a long time, a true veteran,
Been around so long, he describes what we learned in chapter seven,
K and Q, it all comes together here in chapter 10,
With the type of relatability only Gibbs himself could comprehend,
I propose a toast, to my friend who's spontaneous even when he's negative,
Gibbs Free Energy, who helped me understand that all these variables are actually relatives.
~ Keaton - Spontaneity, Entropy, & Free Energy - 2022
Follow the Heat
In thermodynamics, you follow the heat
Society hopes energy will not deplete
"Deplete", it will not, energy is only converted
Efficiency, however, will be a true verdict.
Thinking about energy, it's best to get specific
Examples of reactions and pathways are prolific
In looking at a system, q and w are found
Each calculation is simple, and conversions abound.
Q is the heat, found with a CΔT
The equation that is, not a real one, at that.
W is work (done by or on a system)
Equals -PΔV, but wait, there's more letters, we'll list em!
ΔH stands for enthalpy, for which only change can be measured
Finding heat during phase changes, along a heating curve.
So we have some terms, and equations as well
But is there a device to be employed, as far as we tell?
A calorimeter, of course, of two types we've learned
A bomb and a coffee cup, names aptly earned.
A bomb calorimeter is constant in volume
ΔE of combustion, think mini bomb plume.
Coffee cup calorimetry is constant in pressure
ΔH of phase changes, it is here they are measured
So, moral of the story: we follow the heat
There's many of way to accomplish this feat
Don't forget units, I must say 'for I go
Or else the next midterm, well,
It'd be a new type of low.
-Angelica - Energy, Enthalpy, & Thermochemistry - 2022
We have completed chapter 7,
And moving now onto buffers.
I sit here thinking to myself,
Will they be any tuffer?
Listing out your major species,
Will be the first step to this.
Break each compound into parts,
NH3 remains the same but HCl can't resist.
What is important to remember,
Is to look for conjugate pairs in the list.
If a pair is present,
Then a buffer will exist!
There are many ways to get the pH,
And for buffers there is a way that works great.
Helpful Henderson created an equation of his own,
Only for weak compounds and their conjugate.
Katherine - Applications of Acids and Bases - 2022
Acids and bases
We hear of them often
But what they mean,
Is often forgotten
Acids they give
Bases accept
But what they give and accept
Is often forgotten!
They give protons of course
A hydrogen atom,
Symbolized by H+
How many you say?
Just one, one proton
All night and all day
Acids give bases accept
Never forget
These acid base reactions
Never take a rest
Constantly occurring
Between which species you may ask?
Arhenius said,
Only in aqueous solution.
bronsted-lowry replied,
No no my dear friend!
Acids and bases,
Are found all around,
Any proton donation
Tells you where they are found
Conjugate acids, what does this mean
The answer lies in the change,
Which in chemical equations we see
A proton,
H+
Has a positive charge,
Giving our friends the bases,
+1 to their charge
Meaning what was once a base,
But accepted a proton,
Is now itself,
A conjugate acid.
The same goes for the conjugate bases,
Those who have given a proton,
Give also a +1
From their original charge (-1).
Making them
Conjugate bases chemically and at heart

I studied Equilibrium
All the long year
But I sat in confusion
When a change in conditions came near
I thought all hope was gone
But my good friend Le Chatelier
Sensed my affliction
And said "Never fear!"+
He had a solution
To make it all clear,
For each situation
There were certain rules to adhere
The shift in direction,
The side that equilibrium will veer
Depends on the reduction
Of changes so they would not persevere
(OH-) baby!
(OH-) baby!
You bitter, slippery conjugate base you.
I’ll send you my heart, sealed with a proton,
And as long as Bronsted-Lawry is my name, giving you H+ will be my only game.
(OH-) baby!
I know we’ve had (equilibrium) problems in the past,
But every kiss begins with K and I think we’ve found ours.
(OH-) baby!
You make me want to be a more dissociative guy.
I’ll try to get strong so you can be weak,
And no matter how complicated this gets, the negative log of my H+ will always need you to make 14.
(OH-) baby!
Maybe I’ve seemed amphoteric in other relationships
Maybe I’ve accepted gifts from other acids and
Maybe you think I’m basic.
But honey
My litmus paper has been red since I’ve met you.
Let’s make it purple tonight?

Two solutions dissolved in a yellow flask
And sorry i could not titrate both
And be one scientist, long i asked
And measured the pH of one glass
To where the titration curve began its growth
Then titrated the other, as just as fair
And being perhaps the better buffer,
Because it contained a weak base and conjugate acid pair;
And as for the concentrations there
A- and HA equaled each other
And both that morning equally lay
In ions no acid had neutralized
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how acids react to a base,
I doubted if HA and A- would equalize
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence
Two solutions dissolved in a yellow flask, and I
I took the one more buffered by
And that has made less pH difference

Major species, minor species
Breaks my heart into pieces
Conjugate acids, conjugate bases
See the struggle on all our faces.
Hours spent on ALEKS, I know we suffer
My brain resisting knowledge like a buffer
From pH to pOH, from Ka to Kb
In my dreams these values are all that I can see.
I thought it would be easy, a continuation of chapter seven
But IF tables somehow twist the dial to eleven
I’ll study for hours, even forget how to talk
I haven’t seen my friends but I know Henderson and Hasselbalch
But I know we’ll be fine, we’re smarter than we realize
Just keep working and keep your eyes on the prize
Although sometimes I wish I’d never chosen STEM,
For now I’m chilling, at least until OCHEM.

The Energy of the Universe
Just like the endless ebb and flow of the ocean,
The energy of the universe is constant.
It cascades between systems and surroundings in its potential or motion.
We must see that our combined potentials and kinetics give our energy internal,
Our capacity to be functioning society members--doing work, producing heat.
But beyond the brevity of human existence is the energy eternal.
Some measure their fleeting lives in coffee cups--constantly under pressure,
While others unabashedly fill and maintain their entire space:
Exploding like a bomb creating a fissure.
But if the amount you put into it or how hard you press through remains unchanged,
No work will be done at the end of the day.
And then only the heat that’s present influences how energy is arranged.
So just like the endless ebb and flow of the ocean,
The energy of the universe is constant.
It cascades between systems and surroundings in its potential or motion.

Delta S, Delta H, and Delta G
Are you a fan of abbreviating?
Well, lucky for you there’s thermochemistry!
There’s delta S, delta H, and delta G
All interrelated, but not the same thing
Delta H is the change in enthalpy
The sign will tell you if you’re losing heat
Delta S is the change in entropy
Where the bigger a space and the more energy
Gives a positive sign for a reaction complete
Delta G is the change in Gibb’s Free Energy
it’s how much useful work in a system is free
It also is the most heavily
Reliant on temperature of all the three
At any point S can be found directly
But only the change is found for H and G
There’s a million equations relating the three
But don’t worry! They’re all found on our constant sheet
So if there’s one thing worth memorizing
It’s the difference between delta S, H, and G

Who took the electron?
Who took the electron?
I, said the cathode.
As my reduction potential outrode,
I took the electron.
Who gave it away?
I, said the anode.
When my reductant mournfully erode,
I gave it away.
Who brought the message?
I, said the electrode.
Where my electrons and cavities strode,
I brought the message.
Who’ll balance the charge?
I, said the salt bridge.
If my ions do not perish,
I’ll balance the charge.
Who’ll carry the ions?
I, said the water.
If the reactants do not alter,
I’ll carry the ions.
Who’ll measure the potential?
I, said the potentiometer.
For I can remove all current that linger,
I’ll measure the potential.
Farewell, electron!
Said the reductant.
I’ll be wandering with positive charge,
Waiting for the next migrant.
Welcome, electron!
Said the oxidant.
You’ll like the higher reduction potential,
with laws of electrochemistry to warrant.

Our first journey in is one of equilibrium
Where the forward and reverse reaction rate are always equal
Its simple no need to drive yourself to delirium
For if you had A forms B + 2c
You set it to K that is the equation
Products over reactants its not hard to see
BC squared over A! Wow you must be a sensation
More products then reactants when K is greater then 1
Kp is the same but not concentration its pressure
Plug in the ICE tables when your equation is done
And you solve equilibriums without any effort
On the test you will bill be fly like a Dove
If you remember that Feldwin loves to put none of the above

The Galvanic Cell Roadmap
Galvanic cell problems are easy to do,
Just follow these steps all the way through:
You'll find the anode's half-reaction first,
Where electrons are lost when the metal's immersed.
The cathode equation will now become clear,
As the reaction is reduced, electrons appear.
With these two half-reactions, we are now able,
To form an equation using volts from the table.
Add up the E-values (standard reduction potentials);
Flipping the sign of the anode is essential.
Make sure the electrons are balanced when you combine,
They will cancel each other out when they align.
Now you have a balanced galvanic cell,
Next comes electrolysis, it's easy as well!
~Anna - Electrochemistry - 2016
Disorder is familiar to you and me
So we know about entropy
When our papers fall and flee
Remaining orderly is of low probability
The inevitable is like the nature of spontaneity
Can you see the connection between these three?
Spontaneity, probability, and entropy!
The number of possible locations is positional probability
And the more locations, means more to be free!
Increase in volume, temperature and molecular size is key
To the rise of entropy!
